Quantum of Solace

November 17, 2008

I couldn’t say it was better than Casino Royale, because it turns out they are both connected like parts of two.

Not saying it was a bad movie at all, just saying it didn’t come up with something fresh and new. It simply takes off where the last movie finished. Vesper is dead, James Bond finds out who Mr. White works for and Bond’s new co-star is Olga Kurylenko (Camille Rivera Montes). I’m trying to be spoiler friendly so don’t worry about me ruining it for you.

I felt that the music introduction at the beginning of the movie was a little fresh I suppose. As usual the song was never heard of before Quantum of Solace was released. I didn’t see enough fight animations as opposed to Casino Royale’s ‘You Know my Name‘, although the song ‘Another Way to Die‘ between White Stripes singer Jack White and Alicia Keys was a good, I felt that it didn’t have the kind of vibe Casino Royale had.

By the way, if your wondering about cars for the movie, they kept the Aston Martin Vibe. But by the end of the movie, they trashed six of them. SIX ASTON MARTINS, $_$.

Anyway, it’s a great film and you guys should definitely check it out. I’ve already heard someone say that it was a dud, shun them and just go see it.

Left 4 Dead

November 17, 2008

It’s coming out on November 18th (North America), and I just can’t wait!

Both me and my Dad played the demo together and we were very impressed. My dad was surprised at how many zombies could rush in at once when the horde was alerted, I was more surprised at how advanced the source engine is becoming. The new premise of dynamic behavior physics was by far impressive, especially since half life 2 had combine soldiers dropping like sacks of flour. Not to mention the dynamic shadows, and shaders. I can very well say that Left 4 Dead has lived up to the hype so far, and this game will prove to be in the top 5 at least. That is, if it doesn’t pull a mirror’s edge.

Speaking of which, I was kind of disappointed with mirror’s edge getting a 7.0, it was the 4th most discussed game of 2008 and it had to get a semi-decent rating as opposed to a ground-breaking one. That makes Dead Space the most successful EA game this year. Congratulations EA Rockwood Shores >:3.

Also wtf was with the L4D TV spot? It had EA flash for the first second of the trailer o_o

Far Cry 2

November 13, 2008

It’s pretty good :D

I first opened it yesterday expecting the holy grail, but starting the game helped me realize that no game is ever perfect. The game starts you out with the character of your choice, but your character cannot speak. Right there is a downside, I find only some games can get away with it but Far Cry has had character voicovers (although not perfect) for every single one of their games for both the original xbox and the PC. It just felt a little different playing as a character that has no past, no family, and no occupation.

Aside from that though, the graphics and gameplay are awesome. For the PC, even better :D

I’d hate to be this guy :(

Having the freedom to do whatever missions you want is a blessing, the only thing is you have to have the patience to drive all the way from mission to mission (that includes using the bus transit system of course). I felt that the variety of weapons in the game comes in handy when it comes to figuring out your style. I of course kept my Dragunov handy when taking out different targets assigned to me, and then pack an Uzi for those close quarters we always run into.

The AI has a somewhat interesting blend of ‘smart’, on the road they are pathetic. For an example, you are in a jeep with a mounted machine gun minding your own business on the road, when suddenly a troop drives towards you in an unarmed car as if they have a death wish to have a hundred bullets inserted into their body. Aside from that though, the enemies are smart enough on foot to have you stumped on a few missions.

The main tactic that far cry tries to teach you is plan your attacks wisely, scout the area and take out snipers first, then blow up any conveniently placed explosives that troops just so happen to stand beside. It’s good fun, and it’s worth playing.

Multiplayer is amazing fun, you have to play it a bunch of times in order to understand how awesome it really is. It’s tense, it’s brutal, it’s competitive. It’s exactly what I like in multiplayer. This is one example of how multiplayer worked out for me. I was playing a ranked Team Deathmatch on Fort, my team was in trouble, the score was 47-48 with 10 seconds left, the other team was winning. All of my team were dead and waiting to respawn, so I ran across the upper balcony dodging sniper fire from up above. I was hit giving me a critical wound to the shoulder, so I hid behind a wall and proceeded to relocate my shoulder. The sniper was running across the upper balcony in order to finish me off. After I popped my shoulder back in place I turned around and blindly fired my grenade launcher (1 second left), the sniper was killed and so was one of his teammates that walked into the blast radius at the wrong time. Game over, my team one by 1 point. 49-48.

I might even go over the map editor in my later posts, but overall I would reccomend this game for people who like exploration, action, and first person immersion. Frankly I find myself playing more Gears of War 2 than far cry for now, but I’m sure I’ll come back to it any day now…

I’m going to go on, pretending that I have not been slacking, as you’ve probably already heard my excuses for being inactive already.
